Tim Allen is starring in another successful sitcom, which ends this year. Tap "Sign me up" below to receive our weekly newsletter with updates on movies, TV shows, Rotten Tomatoes podcast and more. Tim originally envisioned the show as This Old House combined with a Myrna Loy-type wife to a William Powell-type husband from "The Thin Man" movies from the forties.

He was the family’s friendly and wise neighbor who served as Tim Taylor’s confidant and always gave the best advice. There was so much mystery behind what his whole face looked like, they kept it up for curtain calls and Earl would come out holding a miniature picket fence. Ashley Judd originally landed the part of Lisa, but due to agent pressure to lean into movies, she backed out days before filming the pilot. Brown says one thing he definitely learned from Home Improvement is that he did not want to be an actor for the rest of his life. For a while, he and his (now ex-) wife ran a company that made vegan cheese. Felony strangulation and misdemeanor charges of fourth-degree assault of apparently his new girlfriend.

On the TV front, he returned to the sitcom world in 2017, leading and executive producing Last Man Standing. Allen was married to Laura Deibel from 1984 to 2003 and the pair share one daughter, Katherine, who was born in 1989. He married Jane Hajduk in 2006 and the duo welcomed their daughter, Elizabeth, in 2009. Home Improvement had been in the works between Tim Allen and the writing/producing team of Carmen Finestra, David McFadzean, and Matt Williams since the summer of 1990. Originally, the project's proposed title was Hammer Time, both a play on the catchphrase made popular by artist MC Hammer and the name of the fictional fix-it show within the series, which was also called Hammer Time. By the time ABC committed to the project in early 1991, Allen and his team had already changed the title to Home Improvement.

Pamela Anderson played Lisa, the first "Tool Time Girl" in the series, launching her acting career. After "Home Improvement," Richardson turned to stage acting and starred in Christmas movies. Allen played the lead part for all eight seasons and earned an Emmy nomination in 1993 for best lead actor in a comedy series.

Beginning in season 2, Home Improvement began each episode with a cold open, which features the show's logo during the teaser. From season 4 until the end of the series in 1999, an anthropomorphic version of the logo was used in different types of animation. Based on the stand-up comedy of Tim Allen, Home Improvement made its debut on ABC on September 17, 1991, and was one of the highest-rated sitcoms for almost the entire decade.

Taran Noah Smith might have quit acting, but his mother released a book about his experience in the spotlight called "Stardom Happens" in 2015. The former actor had a falling out with his family over money following his days on "Home Improvement," but they've since reconciled. At around 17, he fell in love with and married Heidi Van Pelt, a woman almost twice his age. The couple divorced in 2007 after opening a Los Angeles vegan restaurant together, which has since closed. He's currently working on moving forward in his life, especially after a 2012 DUI arrest.

Actor

Dunning was probably best known as Louise, the “Run for the Border” girl in a bunch of Taco Bell commercials. She had also appeared in an episode of Married … With Children and in the movie Dangerous Curves. Mark Taylor is the youngest and often the victim of pranks and jokes but he goes goth in the later seasons which was… interesting. Tim ‘the tool man’ Taylor – the accident-prone patriarch, who spends his time working in his garage on a gorgeous hot rod, or filming his Tool Time program, or just tossing the pigskin with his boys in the yard. Allen was a slapstick genius in this show, whether losing control of a power saw or getting electrocuted by basically anything, it was always fun to watch him get hurt.

Unlike Brad who dated many different girls, Randy, for the most part, only dated one girl, Lauren, whom he remained with for the rest of the series. Randall William "Randy" Taylor – Randy is the middle child, ultimately the smartest of the three boys, and frequently the most mischievous and especially sarcastic troublemaker. Randy's intelligence eventually led to him skipping ahead to advanced math and science classes, and was often the cause of sibling rivalry with Brad. Randy in the later seasons is noticeably a lot shorter than his brothers and his height is often made fun of by Brad. Whenever Tim was in trouble with Jill, Randy was always there with a quick remark that would almost always get him in trouble. His mother is alive for the entire series; however, his father died when Tim was eleven years old.

This gag is extended over the course of the series with other objects obscuring the bottom of his face, or the bottom half showing but the top obscured , or his full face shown but covered by paint. The audience finally sees Earl Hindman's full face unobscured in the series finale's curtain call. On the set of Tool Time, Al gives the viewing audience his iconic salute at the start of each airing at his introduction.

Comedy about the host of a small do-it-yourself TV show, his independent wife and their trio of growing boys. The series is based on the stand-up comedy routines of star Tim Allen. Smith, who starred on the show from age 6 to 16, did not want to act after the series ended. He briefly ran a vegan restaurant and catering company called PlayFood, volunteered in the Philippines for the not-for-profit organization Communitere and later worked for the Community Submersibles Project. Smith married Heidi van Pelt in April 2001 when he was 17 and she was 33.

On that occasion, Randy felt that so much had changed in his absence that he no longer fit in with the family, although confiding in Wilson aided his feelings. A close second is Jill, who only missed the second part of the series finale . Wilson W. Wilson is the man behind the fence, and the best Halloween costume ever.

The show hosted by Tim Taylor in the shooting script for Home Improvement was still called Hammer Time when the first pilot with Frances Fisher was filmed in April 1991. The catalyst for the series' name change was to represent the aspect of fixing problems within the family and home life, as well as the use of mechanics and tools. Once the second phase of the pilot was produced, with all the actors that made the final cut into the series , Tim Taylor's Hammer Time became Tool Time. Al Borland was Tim Taylor's friend and long-suffering co-host on the Tool Time television show sponsored by Binford Tools. As a caricature of real-life home improvement expert Norm Abrams, Al frequently plays the straight-man to Tim's on-screen antics. Al could be characterized as a "mama's boy"; he spent a great deal of time attempting to please his mother Alma – who was severely overweight .

An avid fan of the Detroit professional sports teams, Tim wears Lions, Pistons, Red Wings, and Tigers clothing in numerous instances, and many plots revolve around the teams. He is a former salesman for the fictional Binford Tool company, and he is very much a cocky, overambitious, accident-prone know-it-all. Witty but flippant, Tim jokes around a lot, even at inappropriate times, much to the dismay of his wife. Jill, Tim's wife, is loving and sophisticated, but she is not exempt from dumb moves herself. Family life is boisterous for the Taylors, with the two oldest children, Brad and Randy, tormenting the much younger Mark, all while continually testing and pestering each other. Such play happened especially throughout the first three seasons, and it was revisited only occasionally until Jonathan Taylor Thomas left at the beginning of the eighth season.

His job now in jeopardy, Morgan offered Tim a big raise and an executive producer credit to stay on at the show, but Tim refused. Al's struggles with relationships were a long-running plot point throughout the series. In season one, Al dated Greta Post, whom he met while she was volunteering to help out during a Tool Time show. Al then showed a brief interest in Jill's friend Karen, whom he met at an impromptu gathering at the Taylor home, but Karen had already accepted a date with another one of Tim's friends.

Thomas, whose career took off while the show was airing, exited the show during the eighth season to go to school. Karn guest starred in two episodes of Tim Allen's 2010s ABC/Fox sitcom Last Man Standing in 2013. Thomas has also appeared on Last Man Standing, and has directed episodes of the series. In the show's eighth and final season, the middle child Randy left for an environmental study program in Costa Rica in the episode "Adios", which aired on September 29, 1998. This was done because Jonathan Taylor Thomas reportedly wanted to take time off to focus on his academics.

Like Tim, Al is left-handed and his favorite board games are Parcheesi, Chinese Checkers, Scrabble and Bingo. One episode had a pet of Al's, a turtle named "Scooter," which Tim accidentally dropped in cement. With his dry wit, Al serves as the show's straight-forward, practical man to the wackier, more outgoing Tim.
